Simon started playing aged 9 on the bugle in the Boys Brigade and won Silver Bugle (given for the most promising player) at age 11.
When Simon started attending Chandos school (now Park High), he became involved with the school band under the musical direction of Brian Harrison and Harry White, both of Watford Band. At this point Simon was receiving Saturday morning tuition from Joe Duggan, who also sold Simon his first trumpet, a silver plated B&H Regent model. It was also at this time that Simon first met his long time friend Mike Innes at school and has kept in contact to this day.
Simon was a member of Watford Band in the early '70s, starting on 2nd cornet before progressing to solo cornet before leaving in the mid '70s to play in various bands around the pubs and clubs on trumpet and flugelhorn.
One of the bands Simon joined was a Jazz/Funk band named The Players, subsequently renamed The Antilles, under contract to Ice Records, Eddy Grant's label. The Band toured Britain as support act to various artistes including Kool and the Gang, The Chi-Lites and abroad as main act promoting their own recordings.
With The Antilles, Simon has featured on a number of their recordings playing in the brass section, the "All Night Horns".
Simon has gone back to Watford Band in the twilight of his years to help out on the cornet back bench and also enjoys playing trumpet and flugelhorn with Northwood Volunteer Band.
